Hello Paul! Agree with your sentiment as that got me started too! For targets like yearly bill, I usually just divide it myself then set the target of that specific amount.

You can read more about the documentation here: https://actualbudget.org/docs/experimental/goal-templates/

But just as an example, I have yearly subscription of $600. Divided by twelve that'd be $50/month so I put in the note:
#template 50

There's also a smarter way to do it, but more complex. The documentation teaches you how, but I just can't be bothered XD:
#template 600 by 2025-12 repeat every year

Hope these helps!

Cheers
Gracie

The prince increases and global lack of communication from YNAB have been driving me away from it and this post is just the push I needed to get started with Actual Budget.
The one thing that irks me a little is that I can't seem to understand how "targets" are managed. I have a lot of categories (such as yearly bills) that I set as a target so that I know how much I should save per month. Does Actual have that kind of feature? If not, how would you deal with it?
Thanks for the amazing article!

Your timing for this post was perfect, I've made the switch to Actual after I too was getting pissed off with the price increases. Thanks for the detailed Blog!

Hey Soeren, you're most welcome and glad it was useful!

For income this month vs. last month, as I migrated from nYNAB we didn't had this feature but I recall reading some discord messages when troubleshooting for other stuff where, Actual handled it slightly differently. You have to click on the "To Budget Amount xx.xx" (digits) and "Hold for next month" (see: https://actualbudget.org/docs/budgeting/#income)

For scheduler - unfortunately that is the case, happened to me from nYNAB as well. Had to re-setup everything (took me 1 hour), slightly more complex BUT also more comprehensive with the advanced rules - one tip is use Schedules in combination as Rules to achieve many of the complex stuff - auto assignment, split, etc. (read more: https://actualbudget.org/docs/budgeting/schedules/#schedule-options-that-are-not-supported)

Hope it helps!

Cheers

I have been using YNAB4 since 2014, but since my wife got a new phone (Pixel 8 with Android 14), I couldnt install the YNAB Classic app anymore. I found some workarounds with the Android Dev Tools, bit since i have a home server running docker, I thought that this would be the right moment to finally try Actual.

I have imported my YNAB4 budget which overall went fine, but it seems that actual doesn't differentiate between income for this month or income for next month, so if im looking back in time I see budget to assign for every month. I can live with that, as long as I have my full history.

The second thing the import didn't do are the recurring transactions, like my salary, subscriptions and so on. The schedule section is just empty, so I think I have to do them all over again.

Apart from these 2 minor issues I'm really glad that I finally made the switch, as I now have full control over my data, because I don't need dropbox anymore, and I can run it indefinitely on my home server without having to pay any subscritiion fees.

Its been only a few days, but I hope its working out.

You've inspired me to give Actual a try after 18 years of using YNAB (since the spreadsheet days).
