Hi Kev,

Very good question - so far I hasn't brought any income back into the country as my intention right now focuses on building wealth. With the upcoming changes to treatment of foreign-sourced income there will definitely be impact, at least for overseas dividends received in Malaysia after 2026 I believe.

Frankly, I haven't researched too much into this topic as you can understand the political landscape nowadays will change up, left, down and centre every other year so who knows what the Government will cook again by the time 2026 hits us. One useful article I managed to find is from Tax Consultancy PwC themselves which you can take a look if interested: https://www.pwc.com/my/en/perspective/tax/230804-is-foreign-sourced-income-exempted-from-tax.html

In short, it's really a complicated topic and one would most likely require help/clarifications from Tax Agents or LHDN. For now, I'll just keep it simple - once funds are moved out from Malaysia, it will never be repatriated back. I'll worry about retirement years later 😛

Hope these helps!

Cheers
Gracie

Would you able to share the experience of bringing the money back into the country from taxation perspective? As a person that has main income as salaried worker in Malaysia but has stock investment overseas. Thanks.
